west~bourne is a new mindfulness- and sustainability-focused all-day café in SoHo.

Describing themselves as ‘accidentally vegetarian’, the café is in partnership with the Robin Hood Foundation – a proportion of every purchase will go to local non-profit The Door, to fund hospitality job training for youth in the community. The café is also hiring from that program.

The Spot:

Sustainability and zero-waste are at the core of the design concept, with many of the materials sourced from founder Camilla Marcus’ native California. LA firm Studio Mai has designed the 28-seat space, with reclaimed wood and custom furniture, alongside graphics and art by Foda Studio and illustrator Carly Kuhn.

The Food:

The menu focuses on organic and local produce, inspired by California flavors and ideals, like mindfulness, balance and food as a lifestyle. You’ll find grain bowls like Sunset Grains (wild hive farm grains, almond butter, maitake mushrooms, kale, chili oil) and salads like The Bounty (raw and cooked vegetables, house made beet chips, shallot labneh, walnut bagna cauda), as well as sweeter options like buckwheat Malibu waffles (served with vanilla crème fraiche and inna blackberry jam) and Center Your Chia – a chia pudding with rose halva, almond crumble and raspberries.

There are more classic cooked options, too: scrambled eggs and avocado on an English muffin, and roasted mushrooms on rye bread, and for dessert you can get a chocolate cashew pudding, pies from Four & Twenty Blackbirds, pastries or a – slightly alarming – avocado panna cotta.

The Drinks:

There’s a selection of juices and teas, coffee (hot or cold-brew) and some local beers on draft, as well as a short-but-sweet selection of California wines.

In a Nutshell:

Camilla’s focus on zero-waste and giving back to the community is a refreshing business concept, and we’re pleased to hear the café will be hiring from the same program it’s investing in – that’s commitment. It’s always great to be able to get food that tastes good and does some good at the same time, so we’ve got our fingers crossed that the California flavors might be able to bring a taste of sunshine to NYC. Or some real sunshine. We’re very, very cold.
