Upstate Getaway: Mohonk Mountain House
In our series of Upstate Getaways, we’re covering the best hotels with new things to do and upcoming events, inspiring your next weekend trip away from the hustle and bustle of New York City. This week, we’ve got you covered with Mohonk Mountain House.
We say “house”, but this is actually a grand Victorian castle, complete with an award-winning spa and farm-to-table restaurant, overlooking 40,000(!) acres of pristine forest. It’s hard to believe that such mountainside magic can be found just 90 miles north of New York City.
Maintaining the building’s 20th century architecture, each room honors its rich history with original antique furnishings, cozy fireplaces and Victorian-style curtains. But it’s obvious the curtains are only there for show – nothing should be standing in the way of the beautiful view.
Just when you think it can’t get any better in your romantic nook, Mohonk’s outdoor restaurant The Granary is now officially open for the summer. The new menu focuses on barbecue dishes and produce from Hudson Valley farms, including options such as fire-roasted wagyu skirt steak, local grass-fed burgers with cheese, and house-made rope Italian sausage, alongside salads with grilled summer vegetables. With picnic tables covered in checkered tablecloths and Lake Mohonk right opposite you, this is the ideal setting for a relaxing summer’s day.
