The team behind HPH Group – of Swift Hibernian Lounge and Pier A – expands cocktail bar Underdog in the Financial District.

Originally located in the basement of The Growler, cocktail bar Underdog has taken over the entire building, transforming into a two-level bar with a dining space.

The Spot:

Situated in the heart of Financial District on Stone Street, Underdog aims to create an atmosphere that feels like coming home. Expanding the original concept of Underdog to both levels, the cocktail bar balances its warm and dark color tones with modern features, such as neon signs, colorful vinyl album covers and menus with playful graphics.

The Food:

Focusing on elevated comfort food, Underdog offers a fun bar menu with small plates, soups, sandwiches and large fare. Highlights include a garden flatbread with hummus and sundried tomatoes; roasted bone marrow and a vegan burger with tomato jam. Oh, and you’ll need a plate of “disco fries” to go with your order, featuring brisket, gravy, cheddar and a fried egg.

The Drinks:

With creative director Conor Myers – a 2017 Bacardi Legacy Global finalist – and bartender Josh Baker behind the cocktail menu, you’re definitely in good hands. Offering both old school classics and forward-thinking cocktails, the menu includes options such as “the Salty Dog” (made traditionally with vodka and grapefruit juice) and a modernized “Underdog Salty Dog”, featuring vodka, dry vermouth, housemade sparkling fresh grapefruit and dehydrated salted grapefruit.

The Damage:

Dishes at Underdog vary between $7 and $24; drinks cost around $12.

With Underdog’s cocktails and ambiance becoming decidedly more popular than the bar upstairs (The Growler), it’s only fitting that managing partner Anthony Malone has expanded the bar to two levels.
