Legendary pizza chef returns to New York and opens Una Pizza Napoletana on the Lower East Side.

Chef Anthony Mangieri first opened the humble pizzeria in New Jersey in 1996, before introducing New York to his acclaimed pies with an East Village outpost in 2004. Then, to everyone’s disappointment, he shuttered the restaurant after six years and moved to San Francisco, bringing Una Pizza Napoletana with him. But the story has a happy ending after all – the pizza legend is back and for the first time he’s not doing it on his own.

The Spot:

Together with Jeremiah Stone and Fabián von Hauske Valtierra – of Wildair and Contra – chef Mangieri serves the same Neapolitan style pizza that he’s been making since he was 15 years old. Offering his longtime six signature pies and a brand new addition at the Lower East Side spot, the 12-inch pies are made from naturally leavened dough and baked in a wood-fired brick oven. While the kitchen’s magic is the main attraction at Una Pizza Napoletana, the pizzeria features a modern industrial design with sleek furnishings and a marble top bar.

The Food:

Besides the six staples (think Marinara, Margherita and Bianca), the new pizza “Concetta” features different types of tomatoes, parmesan and cilantro. Complimenting the main course, Una Pizza Napoletana includes a menu of small plates and desserts by the Contra team. To start, there are cold dishes like shaved turnips with ‘nduja-mascarpone, while you can round out your meal with a rotating selection of frozen scoops and desserts such as tiramisu and strawberry panna cotta.

The Drinks:

Una Pizza Napoletana offers an all-natural wine list, focusing on Italian wines.

The Damage:

Pizzas are a tad on the pricey side at $25, but remember it’s cheaper than a flight to Naples. Plus, it will be one of the best Neapolitan pizzas you’ve ever eaten – if not, the best.

In a Nutshell:

The return of Una Pizza Napoletana is a pretty big deal, even in New York’s populated pizza scene – fingers crossed chef Mangieri is here to stay.
