Toriko NY

OPENED82 DAYS AGO

Japan’s top yakitori restaurant expands to the US: Toriko NY is now open in Greenwich Village.

Toriko NY is a Japanese yakitori and wine concept by Tokyo Restaurants Factory, whose empire includes Mifune New York and Michelin-starred sushi spot Amane. Over in Japan, Toriko has become a massive success with numerous awards and up to thirteen locations, so yes, it’s about time the sought-after concept made its US debut.

The Spot:

Traditionally, yakitori is a casual Japanese affair, but Toriko NY redefines the 300-hundred-year-old cuisine. In terms of the restaurant’s design, that means the space is dimly lit and intimate, with a wrap-around wood counter surrounding the open kitchen. That’s where executive chef Shinji Odahara prepares fine-dining style yakitori on electric grills, instead of charcoal ones that can leave you with an unpleasant flavor.

The Food:

The best way to do Toriko NY is through the ten-skewer omakase, showcasing organic chicken in more ways than one (think the heart, chicken meatball and tender loin with wasabi). While chicken takes center stage, the menu also includes other skewers such as deep fried tofu, foie gras and a handful of vegetable varieties. Chicken makes its comeback in Toriko’s small plates, offering options such as broiled chicken skin with ponzu, chicken liver mousse, and ramen in chicken broth, topped with – wait for it – chicken wontons.

The Drinks:

Aiming to complement your meat-focused meal, Toriko NY offers a wine list with light whites and reds to counteract the saltiness. If you prefer something stronger, there are also Japanese-inspired cocktails. Try the Noble Earth, a mix of Nobushi Japanese Whisky, coconut water and pineapple juice.

The Damage:

The omakase tastings are priced at $60 and $85. Skewers à la carte cost anything between $4 to $35.

In a Nutshell:

Yet again, we’re reminded of the perks of living in this concrete jungle – successful overseas restaurants always come to New York first.
