Tokyo Record Bar

OPENED85 DAYS AGO

At a time where the revival of great things of the past are coming back into fashion, we have another new opening that pays homage to a specific style of bar found in Tokyo: sitting in beautiful tiny spaces while listening to records on vinyl and drinking fine Japanese whisky. Tokyo Record Bar sits underneath the newly opened (and equally classy) spot, Air’s Champagne Parlor, and is owned by the same owner – Ariel Arce.

The Spot:

Unlike Air’s Champagne upstairs, where the focus is on new Champagne winemakers, the emphasis at Tokyo Record Bar is on the music. And no expense has been spared in making sure that element of the customer’s experience is made perfectly. There’s custom-designed single-driver speakers, an Audio-Technica turntable, a Cayin A-50T amplifier, and over 500 records (Sony even invited Arce to shop its back catalogues to help fill the space).

The Food:

Tokyo Record Bar serves a $50, seven-course izakaya tasting menu and enlists the help of chef Zach Fabian. Items from the menu include spicy nori chips, caviar sushi, beef nagamaki, and yuzu ice pops. There are two seatings per night, at 6:30 and 8:30 p.m, an a la carte menu is available from 10pm.

The Drinks:

Of course there is beer, sake and a wide range of cocktails on offer too but it is the Japanese whisky here that takes center stage and is encouraged to be enjoyed and paired with the rich sounds of music, offering something for all the senses.

The Damage:

$50 for the seven course izakaya tasting menu and drinks are extra.

In A Nutshell:

Tokyo Record Bar offers the perfect respite and change from the daily pace of the city. There are 16 guests per seating, and, just like customers manning a jukebox, they’ll be able to choose the vinyl that they hear during dinner too. Later, from 10:30 p.m. to 2 a.m., Tokyo Record Bar turns into a bustling bar with a DJ and à la carte menu.
