The Pokéspot

OPENED1187 DAYS AGO

Warning to the Pokemon-obsessed: this is not a PokeStop, it’s The Pokéspot. The increasingly popular trend of DIY and poké (that’s an Hawaiian raw fish salad for those that are still picturing Pikachu in their heads) has spread to Union Square with this newly opened spot offering signature poké bowls and even ‘Avocado Boats’ where the avocado serves as an edible bowl filled with protein.

Diners can choose from signature poké bowls like the Citrus Fresh (with salmon, shrimp, cucumber, green onion, mango, furikake, roasted seaweed, lotus chips and lime ponzu), the Pokéspot Special (with snow crab, salmon, green onion, seaweed salad, furikake, roasted seaweed, lotus chips and Pokéspot sauce) and Teriyaki Surf and Turf (chicken, shrimp, green onion, masago, furikake, roasted seaweed and sweet teriyaki). Or opt to make you own by choosing a base of either white or brown rice, salad, burrito or zucchini noodles and then adding from a choice of proteins, vegetables, toppings including rice puffs, chili pepper and onion crisps and sauces like Sriracha aioli, sesame shoyu and Pokéspot sauce. Sides include tasty options like Crab Guacamole and chips and a small selection of beer and wine is available too.

New York’s first all-poké place, Sons of Thunder, debuted in Murray Hill last October. Then, in January, Pokéworks (a national franchise) appeared near Herald Square. Since then, the poké bowl has spread throughout New York and even popped up in Chinatown with a great spot, Chikarashi (the newest, and best, of the bunch).

The Pokéspot, located at 4th Avenue and East 12th, has only been open a few days and has already seen lines out of its store and into the street – full of New Yorkers looking to sample some of the raw fish delicacy craze that’s been sweeping through New York of late. Let’s just hope the crowds aren’t also full of lost Pokemon Go players looking to re-fuel.
