The Little One

OPENED620 DAYS AGO

The Little One has opened in the LES, offering traditional Japanese desserts with comforting cups of tea and malted hot chocolate.

If you’re someone with a sweet tooth and a soft spot for Japanese cuisine, you’ll be happy with the city’s latest dessert destination.

The Spot:

Living up to its name, the dessert spot is certainly little, offering no more than five tables in the minimalistic space. But with pastry chefs Olivia Leung and Eddie Zheng, who have worked alongside dessert expert Dominique Ansel, The Little One goes big on flavor and presentation instead. Their menu revolves around Japanese desserts and drinks, using ingredients such as hojicha and matcha.

The Food:

The Little One swaps the usual mochi ice cream and egg waffles for more inventive desserts, using interesting flavor combinations to create something new. Think monaka ice cream sandwiches, made with wafer shells, parsnip ice cream and toasted buckwheat groats, or coconut condensed shaved ice cream topped with dehydrated peppermint marshmallow. While the Japanese confection dorayaki usually consists of pancakes with a filling of red bean paste, The Little One spreads the soft pancake-like patties with mascarpone cream and adds confit apples for some crunch.

The Drinks:

More sweetness can be found in the cups at The Little One, where drinks such as malted hot chocolate will continue to surprise you. Made with both cacao and cardamom, it might be able to keep you warm in the cold New York City weather. Did we mention it’s topped with a toasted marshmallow?

In a Nutshell:

As Japanese treats have become increasingly popular in New York, it’s only a matter of time before The Little One is all over your Instagram. Hot chocolate, anyone?
