Tender Greens

OPENED252 DAYS AGO

LA-born Tender Greens has arrived in NYC’s Union Square.

It’s the group’s 27th outpost and first outside of California, and they’ve partnered with Local Roots (a vertical farming start-up) to grow produce for forthcoming new sites on the East Coast.

The Spot:

The bright new restaurant boasts a 16-seat marble chef’s counter, where diners can watch the food being prepared. The décor has an industrial touch, with exposed pipes in the ceilings and aged copper patinas, but with a delicate edge in the marble tabletops, leather cushions and wooden banquettes.

The Food:

Tender Greens has partnered with local vendors to create dishes exclusive to this new location, including the Greenmarket Chicken Salad (produce sourced from the Union Square Greenmarket), and neighboring Beecher’s flagship reserve cheese over Gotham Greens lettuce. The focus is on seasonal and responsibly-sourced ingredients, cooked with a lot of care and attention.

Dishes include a lobster salad (Luke’s Maine lobster tail, baby gem, watercress, celery and apple slaw, citrus herb breadcrums and tarragon dressing), a cumin and coriander falafel plate with tzatziki, a fried chicken sandwich (buttermilk white meat fried chicken, cabbage slaw, sweet and spicy pickles and chili aioli) and the backyard marinated steak – a source tells us this is a bestseller, so now we have to try it.

The Drinks:

The beverages are just as locally-focused as the food, with a seasonal selection of house-made Agua Fresca, coffee by La Colombe, local Long Island wines (by the glass) and beers from Brooklyn and Sixpoint Breweries.

The Damage:

Main ‘plates’ (choose a protein, green and side) are $12–14, with other dishes at similar prices (the lobster salad is $16, and soups at $5.

In a Nutshell:

This opening has been hotly anticipated since 2015, and we’re pleased to see them finally arrive. We’re always pleased to see a seasonal focus, and the rotating selections of drinks and chef’s specials will keep the menu fresh. The design of the place is a little industrial, but it’s clearly got heart at its concept – co-Founder and CEO Erik Oberholtzer said, ‘While [New York] has endless outstanding dining options, what we offer is the kind of food that chefs love to cook for people as they would in their own homes.’
