Sugar Momma

OPENED1322 DAYS AGO

The Financial District café Hole in the Wall now transforms into a dining and cocktail destination at night: Sugar Momma.

After opening two daytime spots – Hole in the Wall coffee shop in Midtown and a café in Financial District – owner Barry Dry has reinvented the cafe space into a secret after-work spot. Hole in the Wall café is one of our favorite Australian spots in the city, so we’re very excited about Dry’s newest late-night project.

The Spot:

As the coffee bar disappears behind yellow curtains, the bright Hole in the Wall café goes dark and intimate, with red lights and a projector flashing black and white imagery on the back wall. Aiming to be both intimate and fun, the restaurant and bar plays 90s hip hop throughout the evening.

The Food:

Hole in the Wall’s executive chef Brent Hudson extends his Australian-style dishes to the evening. Small plates include crispy pork with soy caramel sauce, flat bread with a hummus cauliflower dip, and a shrimp and crab cracker with avocado puree – we knew avocado would make an appearance somewhere. Looking for something a little more substantial? The truffle beef and ‘shroom burger with crispy bacon has your name on it.

The Drinks:

Mixologist Ryan Byrnes offers 11 signature cocktails, such as Momma’s Martini (vodka, passionfruit, raspberries and prosecco), Smoke’n (mezcal, grapefruit syrup, lime, hot sauce and soda) and the Sweet n’ Sour (whiskey, maple syrup, lemon and egg white). If that doesn’t tickle your fancy, Sugar Momma also has wine and beer.

The Damage:

Dishes vary between $14 and $27, while cocktails cost around $13.

In a Nutshell:

When the same space offers hanging bacon jerky for breakfast, and cocktails with brilliant bites for dinner, you know you’re living in the best city. As Sugar Momma says: “Drink up darling, life is short” – it would be rude not to…
