Smør
A new Danish destination, Smør, arrives in the East Village.
Translating to butter in Danish, Smør offers Nordic treats in a fast-casual setting.

The Spot:
Owners Sebastian Perez and Sebastian Bangsgaard have more than just the same name in common, wanting to bring a sense of hygge to New York City. Instead of rushing for one place to the next and drowning yourself in constant noise, the Danish concept encourages you to slow down and appreciate the simple things. That’s why Smør brings you plenty of natural light (a welcome change to our often dark apartments), cushions for coziness and dishes that are healthy and comforting at once.

The Food:
Just like in Copenhagen’s cafés, the menu revolves around smoked fish, grain bowls and so-called Smørrebrød. Served on thin slices of rye bread, these open-faced sandwiches come out with towering toppings such as curried herring and soft-boiled egg, roasted potato with aioli (yes, carbs on carbs is a wonderful thing), and smoked salmon with lemon curd and dill crème (so refreshing). Avocado toast, who?

Other daytime delights include Danish pancakes and buckwheat noodles, while dinner will be launched later down the road.
The Drinks:
Smør serves coffee and tea, as well as seasonally changing house sodas.
The Damage:
Dishes range between $8 and $15; drinks are priced at around $2-$4.5.

In a Nutshell:
If you ever feel overwhelmed by the hustle and bustle of New York, just head to Smør for your dose of hygge and health – whether you find it in food or the warming ambiance is up to you. But don’t you dare come here without ordering Smørrebrød (simply saying Smørrebrød is likely to make you laugh).
