Simon & The Whale

OPENED14 DAYS AGO

Simon & The Whale is a new restaurant from restaurateur Gabriel Stulman, located in Sydell Group’s Freehand New York hotel.

They serve modern American food with global influences, in a comfortable and casual space.

The Spot:

Designed by Roman & Williams, the décor is warm and welcoming, with an 18-seat wraparound bar, a glass-walled private dining room, and outdoor seating available in the summer. Tile cladding and wooden millwork (made with Iroko, a sustainable Japanese wood) line the space, which is accentuated with marble and brass.

The Food:

Executive Chef Matt Griffin (formerly of Fedora) heads the kitchen, with Head Baker Zoe Kanan and Freehand’s Head Butcher Joe Geinert on hand as well. The menu starts with snacks such as smoked gouda and bacon-stuffed zeppole (we’re listening…) and black bread with seaweed butter, followed by starters including confit squid with smoked mussels, and the chicory tonnato with soy egg, parmesan, and simit bagel chips (a sort of updated Caesar salad).

Main courses include monkfish in paprika broth with braised beans, guinea hen two ways (breast served alongside leg-meat sausage, with turnips and apples) and pork collar milanese with aioli, apricot, and arugula. Not to be missed is the wagyu flapsteak (a bottom sirloin cut), served with mushrooms, bordelaise sauce and beets, or the grilled whole fish (for two).

The Damage:

Snacks and starters range from $8–18, with most mains $18–32 and the whole fish $60.

In a Nutshell:

The design of this space is beautiful, and the menu seems well-thought-out – the guys at Freehand have clearly put a lot of heart into SATW, and we’re hoping that plays out in the food. We’ve got to try that zeppole, for a start.
