Sant Ambroeus Coffee Bar

OPENED137 DAYS AGO

Don’t let the name fool you: Sant Ambroeus Coffee Bar, now open in Lenox Hill, is far more than just coffee. Their latest outpost in the Upper East Side is the newest location for this upscale New York chain of bakeryslash-cafe-slashcocktail lounges.

While this particular storefront may not offer a full dining experience like their original Madison Avenue location or other Sant Ambroeus restaurants across the state (and Palm Beach), the new bar – located inside the Hanley Building, a luxury residence in the UES – still brings a touch of class and sophistication to a locale that is already dripping with panache.

The Spot:

Inspired by the first Sant Ambroeus location on 78th and Madison, the décor casually drops hints of something far grander than the cozy café space might betray at first glance. The coffee bar is an homage to the original, a few blocks south, and the brand’s signature colors of pink, mahogany and cream are well-represented.

The Food:

While the menu here is limited to panini, salads and dessert, there’s many standout items on that list – including the Duomo, a pressed panino with tuna, olives, celery and cherry tomatoes, and a Chicchirichi (try saying that five times fast), a traditional chicken salad with celery. For smaller bites, there’s the paninetti, home-baked rolls with a variety of toppings including smoked salmon, Parma prosciutto, and – of course – avocado.

The Drinks:

Various incarnations of the coffee bean are on offer (naturally): espresso, cappuccino, chai latte, and similar favorites. Some interesting options that aren’t your average Starbucks order include a cappuccino Viennese – with cocoa powder, hot milk foam and thick hot chocolate – and a shakerato, served in a martini glass for your everyday ‘Sex And The City’ moments. (Go drink it on the steps of the Met if you’d like, it’s nearby.)

But Sant Ambroeus Coffee Bar isn’t content to just serve up cups of joe. Italian cocktails are also on the menu, including some timeless favorites like the negronibellini, spritz and more.

The Damage:

The panini and salads will set you back about $10. All of the desserts and pastries are under $10, and a basic cup of coffee will run you about $3 – with the more involved drinks about double that.

It’s worth mentioning that every day from 5PM to 9PMSant Ambroeus Coffee Bar offers ‘aperitivo hour’, offering diners a selection of small bites with a purchase of cocktails or wine.

In A Nutshell:

Forget Starbucks, and forget Dunkin’ Donuts. If you’re in Lenox Hill and craving a sweet snack – or something to tide you over until you can sit down and treat yourself to a real meal – then you shouldn’t look further than this.
