Sandwicherie

OPENED848 DAYS AGO

Union Square, one of New York’s premier hotspots when it comes to dining both fast and casual, just welcomed its newest resident – Sandwicherie, a classic salad-and-sandwich bar with a few unique twists.

Kostas Karagiannis, the man behind Sandwicherie, has been in the restaurant industry since he was 14 years old, and considers the shop to be a family business. “I have people that have been with me for 15 years,” he said. “It’s a family … that’s how we operate our stores.”

The Spot:

The Union Square corner shop is Sandwicherie‘s second storefront, after their first location in Grand Central Terminal. The interior is clean and well-lit, with bright wooden tones offering a pleasant contrast to black cast-iron finishing touches. One side of the space is dominated by the enormous salad bar, which offers a dazzling array of choices – including some not seen in traditional mix-your-own-salad joints.

There’s plenty of space to order and wait for your food without getting jostled, which is a rare positive in this city – with the downside being limited seating, but it’s clear that the store concept lends itself better to takeout dining, given Union Square’s massive office population.

The Food:

The food at Sandwicherie can largely be divided into two sections: sandwiches and bowls. The sandwich menu is extensive, to say the least: pretty much every protein under the sun (and sea) is represented here, including the Union Square (exclusive to this location), stacked with flank steak, tomato relish, avocado and citrus cilantro aioli. The Times Square wrap is stuffed with marinated pork shoulder, shallots, ham, swiss cheese, pickles and an herb-chili sauce, bringing to mind visions of a classic Cuban sandwich.

There’s also grilled wild salmon – which comes with grilled onions, relish and aioli – as well as a classic New York smoked salmon, with capers, cucumber and red onions. Finally, chicken gets a section on the menu all to itself, with no less than six different options.

The salad/grain bowl bar offers a couple of unique twists on the usual classic office lunch choices, as well. True to Karagiannis’ heritage, the toppings list includes several Mediterranean-influenced options, like marinated persian cucumbers, goat cheese, muhammara and a spicy harissa spread.

Finally, the menu also offers several breakfast selections: create-your-own omelets, Greek yogurt, gluten free breakfast bowls, burritos and more.

Although this may seem like a lot to take in, Karagiannis says he wanted the menu to remain flexible. “We don’t want to build a salad with individual ingredients and charge [customers] 50 cents or a dollar for extras,” he said. “We have composed selections that, if the customer wants an extra ingredient, it’s not the end of the world.”

The Drinks:

Sandwicherie offers an array of juices, teas and smoothies, most of them made in-house.

The Damage:

The bowls and pasta bar are priced at $8.95 (before extras), while the sandwiches and burgers run the gamut from $8.95 to $12.95 (for the smoked salmon sandwich, served on pumpernickel). Smoothies and juices are around the $5-$6 range.

Finally, it should be mentioned that Sandwicherie offers a reward program: 1 point for every dollar, and 10 dollars free for every 100 points.

In A Nutshell:

If you work in the Union Square area and are growing tired of the same old stuff for an office lunch, Sandwicherie might be just what you’re looking for. Although the concept of a salad-slash-deli is old hat, this newest example has just enough twists in the old formula to jazz up your day – at a reasonable price.
