Rouge Tomate Café

OPENED1323 DAYS AGO

Michelin-starred restaurant Rouge Tomate Chelsea has opened a fast-casual café, with a new executive chef – Matt Aita.

This isn’t the first time a fine dining destination has decided to go casual – the team behind Eleven Madison Park and The Nomad opened their fast-casual café Made Nice last year – so it seems restaurateurs are aiming to reach a diverse mix of clientele.

The Spot:

After opening a new location in Chelsea back in 2016 (Rouge Tomate first opened its doors on the Upper East Side), founder Emmanuel Verstraeten has now added a fast-casual concept at the front of the restaurant, together with chef Aita and general manager Cristian Molina. Complementing their fine dining-style dinner service, Rouge Tomate Café offers more approachable fare at the counter, available for dine-in or takeaway.

The Food:

Chef Aita, who made a name for himself at Daniel and Jean-Georges before serving as executive chef at Le Philosophe and Chefs Club, is in charge of both the café and dinner service at Rouge Tomate. Sticking to their mission to serve food that is sustainable without compromising on taste, the menu features a selection of healthy dishes. For breakfast, there’s creamy oats with seasonal jam or an egg sandwich with vegetables, while burgers and salads are the focus for lunch and dinner. Think Moroccan chicken burgers with mint yogurt, market grain bowl with chickpeas and broccolini, and roasted cauliflower ‘Caesar.’

The Drinks:

Like most fast-casual spots, Rouge Tomate Café serves fresh juices and coffee.

The Damage:

Breakfast dishes vary between $6 and $10, while the salads and burgers cost around $14.

In a Nutshell:

With the launch of an informal café inside the established Michelin-starred restaurant, Rouge Tomate is basically giving us the best of both worlds – don’t judge us for stopping by twice in one day.
