Rice & Gold

OPENED83 DAYS AGO

Just when you thought the Lower East Side couldn’t get any more hip, along comes Rice & Gold – the second space to recently open in Hotel 50 Bowery, home to The Crown. Dedicated to Asian American flavours, with some other international influences along the way, the spot is the perfect place to grab some modern dim sum in a beautiful setting.

The Spot

Occupying the ground floor of the Hotel 50 Bowery – a pretty swanky boutique hotel that opened in the summer – Rice & Gold is the kind of ultra-cool place you’d want to visit for the aesthetic alone. The vast industrial space is filled by a long communal table, smaller wooden booths, and sweeping graffiti murals of the neighbourhood courtesy of Ewok. Even the bar has a focal point, featuring a golden installation referencing grain silos traditionally used to store rice; with an overall effect of an atmosphere marrying old and new, it’s an ideal spot for creating Instagram envy.

The Food

Designed by Top Chef veteran, Dale Talde, the menu is inherently Asian American, while also referencing the flavours of the nation’s immigrant cuisines. Taking cues from China and the Philippines, to Mexico and Bangladesh, it is a reminder of just how good blending cuisines can be – with highlights including jerk roast duck, lamb neck barbecue bao, and rabbit vindaloo. If dim sum’s what you’re craving though, go for the candied pork bun or lobster egg roll.

For those looking for a luxurious start to the day, Talde’s touch is also present in the breakfast menu, which, in addition to more traditional American fare, also has an entire section devoted to dumplings. Enough said.

The Drinks

There are plenty of options to wash down your feast thanks to an equally creative drinks menu – cocktail highlights alone include the Endless Summer (tequila, yuzu juice, grapefruit juice, pear shrub, and agave syrup), the Little Pink Corvette (hibiscus syrup, sake, and prosecco), and Miranda’s Right (Rittenhouse Rye, amaro, triple sec, and chocolate bitters). Meanwhile, the extensive wine list features about 20 international whites and 30 reds, with a range of beers and sakes also on offer.

The Damage

Appetizers will set you back at around $16 a plate, with sharing platters ranging between $26-145, and entrees between $17-43.

In A Nutshell

Why wouldn’t you want to go to a place that has platters of lobster and dim sum in the same place?
