Public Kitchen is the new restaurant from NYC Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten, who has 14 other restaurants in NYC and Hamptons areas.  Public Kitchen encompasses all of “New York” in its fare, striving to capture food from every culture and taste in New York City.

The Spot:

With 150-seats, Public Kitchen is in the chic Lower East Side Public Hotel, from Ian Schrager.  It’s modern, yet streamlined, upscale, yet casual.

The Food: 

The food at Public Kitchen reflects all of the cultures, peoples, and various foodways that make up the melting pot that is New York City.  The kitchen has a smoker, a wood-burning oven, and a wood-burning grill, and even features menu items specifically for vegan eaters.  Public Kitchen’s menu is all-inclusive to the entire New York population.

The breakfast menu includes a variety of breads and baked goods like Balthazar croissants and protein rich muffins, fruits, grains, and cereals like chia pudding with tropical fruit and cacao nibs, and egg options like a goat cheese and spinach omelette.  Breakfast also brings pancakes and toasts, smoked fish and breakfast meats, and a variety of fresh pressed juices.

For later in the day, the menu features a variety of bar snacks, appetizers like spicy tuna tartare and burrata, small pizza and pasta menus, and fish and meat menus, with options like roasted hake with glazed spring onions, carrots, peas, and saffron, and a cheeseburger with frizzled onions, house-made pickles, and french fries.  The desserts include Italian favorites like panna cotta and Tartufo, as well as a peach and blueberry cobbler, strawberry linzer bar, and a raspberry cheesecake sundae.

The Damage:

The breakfast prices range from $5 – $8 for breads, $8 – $16 for fruits, grains, and cereals, $14 – $23 for Eggs, $16 – $23 for pancakes and toasts, and $8 for sides like bacon and sausage.

Appetizers for dinner run from $10 to $18, up to $22 for pizza, and $19 for pasta.  The fish, depending on your choice, can run from $24 to $38, and meats run similarly from $23 to $32.  Each dessert is $11.

In a nutshell:

Chef Jean-Georges is one of the most successful Chefs in New York City.  Public Kitchen will definitely carry the same quality and deliciousness that each of his other restaurants serve, and in a location like the Lower East Side, it’s sure to be a hit.
