Oxomoco

OPENED72 DAYS AGO

Mexican restaurant Oxomoco lands in Greenpoint.

Brought to you by chef Justin Bazdarich – of Speedy Romeo, one of the best places to eat on the Lower East Side – Oxomoco focuses on wood-fired Mexican fare.

Oxomoco - interior

The Spot:

Named after the Aztec Goddess of the Night, Oxomoco is housed in a large industrial-looking space with three skylights, flooding the restaurant with natural light. Combining the natural materials of the building in Greenpoint with Mexican elements, Oxomoco features green plants and an outdoor patio – reminiscent of the vibe in Mexico City.

Oxomoco - tacos with avocado

The Food:

Helmed by Speedy Romeo chef Justin Bazdarich with chef de cuisine Matt Conroy – formerly of Virginia’s and Empellon – the menu focuses on tacos and shareable dishes. With the wood-fired grill taking center stage in the kitchen, options include tacos with grilled asparagus, lamb barbacao or pork cheek carnitas, alongside small plates such as smoked carrots and tuna tostada with grilled avocado. If you’re looking for something more filling, Oxomoco also offers heartier dishes such as grilled steak with charred poblano chorizo beans.

Oxomoco - carne brava

The Drinks:

Following suit with the wood-fired dishes, Oxomoco offers cocktails made with ingredients such as wood-fired toasted pineapple or smoked mole, as well as classic offerings. Think margaritas, micheledas and Mexican wines.

The Damage:

Tacos vary between $14 and $20; small dishes cost $12-$19; cocktails are $14.

In a Nutshell:

While chef Bazdarich doesn’t necessarily have experience in Mexican cuisine, the wood-fired grill is certainly no stranger in his kitchen. The result is an inventive menu of Mexican dishes, giving you another reason to visit this area – have you been to cocktail bar The Springs in Greenpoint yet?
