An all-female kitchen that butchers and serves its own meat has just opened in Brooklyn – Otway. It’s a bit of a clear fact that old school butcher shops are making a comeback but, being New Yorkers, we’re far too lazy to take our cuts back home and cook them ourselves. So it was a relief when spots like White Gold and now, Otway, opened up where we could get the best of both worlds.

The Spot:

The new restaurant is helmed by duo Samantha Safer and Claire Welle who also owned the Tilda All Day Cafe that previously lived at this space (it closed back in September following a heated dispute between Samantha Safer and partner, Daniel Nusbaum). Nusbaum is now out of the partnership, leaving a space for Head Chef Claire Welle to step into and lead their all-female kitchen team.

The Food:

If you visited Tilda All Day Cafe you’ll be pleased to know that Welle will still be serving her epic baked goods at Otway too. Expect treats like buckwheat chocolate cake with herbs, rye bread loaves and burnt almond pudding. Obviously, the main show here is built around those house-butchered meats. There’s an adventurous menu of dishes like duck-heart skewers, poached oysters and fried tripe served with a house made version of HP sauce. Other dishes include pea croquettes with lardo and a root vegetable tart.

The Drinks:

There is no coffee available but there is a range of cocktails, beer and wine.

The Damage:

Prices range for $4-$8 for small, snack dishes, $12-$16 for appetizers and $26-$32 for entrees.

In a nutshell: 

If you’re not a fan of sampling tastefully seasoned animal organs then this may not be the place for you. The menu is a taste-adventure for carnivores and, if embraced with an open mind, you will not be disappointed.
