Otto’s Tacos
Otto’s Tacos expands with a new outpost on the Upper East Side.
After moving from LA to New York, founder Otto Cedeno was missing the taquerias and Mexican flavors of his hometown, which inspired him to open Otto’s Tacos in the East Village back in 2013. A few years down the road, the LA-inspired taqueria is still standing strong and has expanded throughout Manhattan’s neighborhoods, including the West Village, Hell’s Kitchen and now the Upper East Side.
The Spot:
Similar to the other locations, the new Otto’s Tacos is a casual eatery with affordable tacos. Designed by animator and story artist David Brown, the space includes a mural of the iconic sunset-scene from Indiana Jones, while the outside mural depicts tacos falling from the sky (if only that would really happen).
The Food:
Paying homage to LA-style street tacos and Cedeno’s new hometown New York City, the menu marries tradition with a dose of creativity. Served on corn tortillas, options include grilled chicken, shrimp, carne asada with a spicy jalapeño marinade, as well as a seasonal veggie offering: honey-chipotle brussels sprouts. Otto’s Tacos also offers these fillings as a Gorgon, a big deep-fried taco with double the filling and guacamole – no wonder it’s a favorite.
The Drinks:
Otto’s Tacos serves sodas, beer and Mexican coke – and yes, Mexican coke is definitely superior to corn-syrup-sweetened American coke.
The Damage:
Tacos cost $3-$4; gorgons are $8-$9; salads are around $12.
In a Nutshell:
While Otto’s Tacos may seem like just another fast-casual spot, all tortillas are made from scratch and topped with well-seasoned fillings. Also, the amount of guacamole that goes on each taco is something to write home about.
