Old Monk

OPENED129 DAYS AGO

There’s a new Indian restaurant in the East Village, aiming to redefine Indian fare with a rule-breaking menu. Old Monk is the newest concept from restaurateur Sushil Malhotra, known for making Indian food mainstream via Café Spice, and his award-winning restaurants.

The spot:

After the success of the high-end stylish Indian restaurants Akbar and Dawat in Westchester New York, restaurateur Sushil Malhotra opens yet another Indian restaurant – this time in partnership with executive chef Navjot Arora. Old Monk specializes in Contemporary Indian Soul Food, serving classic Indian dishes with a modern twist.

The Food:

The food is a different spin on Indian cuisine, while still including our favorites. The house-baked Naan is topped with goat cheese, pumpkin- and melon seeds, and the Anjeer Kofta consists of tender fig and paneer cheese dumplings in a saffron sauce. The lamb chops are marinated in the iconic Indian dark rum Old Monk – after which the restaurant is named – and grilled on the tandoor. All the spices are ground in-house, honoring the rich and vibrant flavors of Indian cuisine.

The Drinks:

The beer and wine license is yet to come, but naming the restaurant after the Indian dark rum brand raises the bar. With the planned beverage program run by Consulting Sommelier Kristie Petrullo-Campbell (ex-Eleven Madison Park, number one restaurant in the world), drinks shouldn’t be a disappointment. The extensive craft beer selection and wine list at Old Monk aim to complement the spices of the Indian cuisine.

The Damage:

The dishes that are accompanied with basmati rice and lentils vary between $18 and $29, with the lamb chops being the most expensive option on the menu. The chef’s special family feast is $58 per person, giving you as many as four courses.

In a nutshell:

Old Monk serves modern-style Indian food, giving us something new to enjoy in addition to the classics. The menu offers plenty of dishes to share, making it the perfect spot for a dinner with friends or family.
