Oka

OPENED29 DAYS AGO

Oka is the newest restaurant from Wd~50 veteran and The Crimson Sparrow owner Chef John McCarthy. Oka combines Japanese Izakaya – plates paired with sake – with the New York City environment surrounding the restaurant, providing guests with a more familiar approach to authentic Japanese dining.

The Spot:

The bright space isn’t traditionally Japanese, but like the rest of the restaurant, simply inspired by the culture and infused with bits of New York.  Oka has 40 seats, and is decorated with some of Chef McCarthy’s own painting and drawings.  Like some of the vegetables, the artwork will be switched out seasonally to keep the space fresh and new.  Neutral tones, walnut tables, and Wegner-style elbow chairs elevate the restaurant to high-end status, while brick walls, walnut cabinetry, and off-white tiles keep the space inviting.

The Food:

The dishes here are small plates designed to be paired with sake and shared.  A certified sake sommelier, Chef McCarthy has put a lot of thought into his pairings.  Dishes at Oka include fresh fish crudos, grilled vegetables and meats, noodle, and fried chicken, or kara-age.  Some dishes are subject to change based on the seasonal availability of vegetables and meats, but for the most part, the menu will remain the same throughout the year.  Some of the cocktails served at Oka should be familiar to those who have experienced The Crimson Sparrow, like the Lillet Blossom, with ginger, junmai sake, Lillet, vodka, and grapefruit.  Other cocktails include the Sakura Sling, a house strawberry infused shochu with gin, pineapple, and lime, and sparkling wine spiked with plum wine, or umeshu, and grapefruit.  Other boozy drinks include Japanese beers and whiskeys as well as local brews and spirits.

In a nutshell:

Chef McCarthy has spent many years in Asia, researching culture and the foodways, while making quite a bit of the food himself.  His success in the restaurant industry is also not new: he was Chef Wylie Dufresne’s (of Du’s Donuts) research and development cook, and has his other Japanese-inspired restaurant The Crimson Sparrow, located in Hudson, has been thriving since 2012.  Allow yourself to fall in love with Japanese-inspired fare and drinks Chef John McCarthy’s newest restaurant now.
