Nusr-Et

OPENED691 DAYS AGO

Chef Nusret Gökçe has opened a New York branch of his international steakhouse in Midtown.

After seeing countless memes of Salt Bae all over the Internet, we can finally witness his signature move with our own eyes at Nusr-et Steakhouse. If you have no idea who or what I am talking about, who are you and where have you been? Not on the Internet, that’s for sure.

The Spot:

The famous butcher became an Internet sensation thanks to his extravagant manner of sprinkling salt on cuts of meat, filmed and photographed by many at his steakhouses in Turkey and the Middle East. A few months ago Nusret Gökçe opened his first US steakhouse in Miami, but he has now opened the doors at his New York restaurant in the former China Grill space. The décor takes it back to where it all started, with Turkish tiles on the walls, as well as a blown-up picture of the man himself doing his signature move. This is Salt Bae after all; there’s no room for modesty.

The Food:

The menu is similar to his first US restaurant in Miami, with meat obviously being the main attraction. Think marinated sliced beef, different styles of steak and the famous Bae Tomahawk. But you’ll also find plenty of other dishes that have the Butcher’s name written all over them, including the Nusret Burger, Nusret meatballs and Nusret spaghetti. Desserts take a traditional Turkish route, featuring baklava and Şöbiyet (a pastry stuffed with cream).

The Drinks:

Drinks are standard, including soft drinks, cocktails, and wine.

The Damage:

This depends a little on how much you are willing to spend, or better said, whether or not you want to be as extravagant as Nusret Gökçe. For example, you can order meat sushi for $20, but Nusret’s spaghetti will cost you $70 and the ‘Bae Tomahawk’ is $275. But hey, at least you will have a picture of the, er, legend.

In a Nutshell:

The reviews for this chain of steakhouses vary across the globe, so it remains to be seen how much weight a viral video can carry in the restaurant world. Now that Nusret Gökçe is sprinkling salt in New York and has plans for many more restaurants in the future, it’s safe to say that the power of Internet is crazy.
