Mr White

OPENED1077 DAYS AGO

A New Orleans-inspired restaurant lands in the East Village.

After working in the nightlife scene at spots like Club Love, Whiskey town, Tribe, Jeffrey White has partnered with Kelly Rheel for his first restaurant – Mr White will serve elevated Southern cuisine in an elegant space.

The Spot:

Setting out to transport you to NOLA, Kelly Rheel has created a Southern mansion right here in Manhattan. Think white marble bar, golden accents throughout the space and a dining room that’s fitted with a fireplace and velvet curtains, while the old-school hip hop music makes everything a little more relaxed.

The Food:

Chef and partner Andrew Dunleavy is in charge of the menu, bringing his experience from Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s kitchens, BLT Prime and Compass. The dishes are a modern take on Southern comfort food, such as braised pork cheek with sweet potatoes and collard greens, chargrilled oysters with baguette and lemon, and a vegan rib sandwich. The New Orleans staple dessert – Bananas Foster – is on the menu too, but Dunleavy makes a deconstructed version where the banana is split in half and torched until it’s covered in a layer of sugar.

The Drinks:

Besides French wines and beers, the drinks menu includes signature cocktails, such as the Lemon Meringue (vanilla-infused sour mix shaken with soju) and the Hornet’s Nest (muddled fresh sage with smoked honey and soju).

The Damage:

Small plates vary between $12–$30, while main courses are $19–$36.

In a Nutshell:

The grand décor and upscale Southern dishes definitely contrast the casual East Village dining scene, but it might be just what this part of town needed. We’re excited to hear more about Mr. White, especially as there will be a special chef’s tasting menu available in the back dining room – this spot could become a new date-night favorite.
