Minnie’s

OPENED85 DAYS AGO

With the recent launches of Motel Morris and Fusco channelling the warmth and nostalgia of home, it seems that New York’s restaurateurs are increasingly looking to their families for inspiration – and the Lower East Side’s newest opening is just the latest in this trend.

Created by Millie Stallings, Minnie’s is a love letter to the Stalling family, celebrating their love of eating and entertaining through a thoughtfully curated menu and space. With a warm atmosphere and modern American comfort food, it looks set to be a home away from home for diners in the area.

The Spot:

Found on the corner of Clinton and Stanton in the Lower East Side, Minnie’s draws upon Millie’s childhood for inspiration; the playfully illustrated cushions, coasters and menus, collections of design and travel books, and the large window boxes of wildflowers all create a sense of nostalgia while still feeling cool, while high ceilings and large windows make it a nice spot for summer dining.

The Food:

Chef John Keller adds some Middle Eastern flavours to the Stallings’ family recipes, which focus largely on lean proteins and market ingredients. Fresh, produce-driven dishes are designed to be shared family-style, with Smoked Cauliflower Fritto, Faro Pearls, and Five Greens Salad providing a healthy start to the meal. Look to the entrées for modern American standards, which include Roasted Half Chicken with lemon-sofrito, Pepper-Crusted Salmon, and John’s Burger – the ultimate comfort option with ground brisket, fontina, and pork belly.

Finally, if you were in any doubt about the menu’s heritage, look no further than the dessert: Pink Cake – a Stallings birthday staple – and homemade cookies baked by Millie’s younger sister.

The Drinks:

Minnie’s house cocktails are a delicate affair, with the Backyard (chamomile-infused gin, fresh lime juice and tonic) and the Love Potion (tequila, grapefruit bitters, citrus, yuzu and rose water) acting as the perfect drinks for summer evenings. For something more robust, there is also a good selection of wines and local beers.

The Damage:

Starters will set you back between $10-15, while mains range between $16-25.

In A Nutshell:

Arriving just in time for the summer, Minnie’s fresh menu and sweet nostalgia will make you feel part of the family.
