Max Beckmann in New York

OPENED1144 DAYS AGO

A new exhibition at The Met is putting the spotlight on an artist’s special connection with New York City: Max Beckmann in New York. The artist, Max Beckmann, died in late December of 1950 whilst he was on the way to The Met to view his piece: Self-Portrait in Blue Jacket which was in the exhibition American Painting Today. But he suffered a fatal heart attack on the corner of 69th Street and Central Park West and never made it to the museum – this poignant circumstance of his death serves as the inspiration for this exhibition.

Max Beckmann in New York features 14 paintings that Beckmann created while living in New York from 1949 to 1950 as well as 25 works created from 1920 to 1948, from New York collections. The collection is made up of several groups of his iconic works including self portraits; mythical, expressionist interiors; robust portraits of women and performers; landscapes and triptychs.

Beckman was at the pinnacle of his career in Germany where he was represented by prestigious art dealers, taught at the Städel Art School in Frankfurt and moved in a circle of influential writers, critics, publishers and collectors. However, in 1937 his work was dubbed as ‘degenerate’ by the National Socialists and confiscated from German museums. He then immigrated to Holland to live for 10 years. In 1947 he finally arrived in New York where he taught at the Brooklyn Museum Art School and his work became well known again thanks to some private art dealers from Berlin bringing his works over to the U.S. Forging close relationships with influential collectors and the director of The Museum of Modern Art, Beckman soon began exhibiting in New York City. Many of these early works are on view at this exhibition at The Met.
