Martina Pizzeria is Danny Meyer’s newest opening, delivering high quality, fast casual pizzas to Third Avenue. The spot is a spinoff of his other pizzeria, Martina, and is gearing up to make 90 pies an hour.
Located on the corner of East 11th Street and Third Avenue, Martina Pizzeria will have no problem attracting young customers. In the heart of the East Village, Martina Pizzeria is located across from one of NYU’s most popular dormitories and on a street populated with bars and hangouts. The proximity to college students, NYC locals, and those making a post-bar pizza runs, the pizzeria can expect to hit their 90-pizzas-an-hour mark in no time. The restaurant will have 13 tables, a counter to order from, and an outdoor café spot.
Obviously, the star of the show here is pizza. But Martina will also serve meatballs, salads, chicken dishes, vegetables, and gelato for dessert. To begin, guests can choose between two different Fritti, or fried plates, like Suppli, which are the Roman version of the Sicilian arancini, or Crochetta, or croquettes. Chicken meatballs and veggies like marinated zucchini and a mixed greens salad are also featured. Now for the pizzas. There are 8 different types of pizzas here, each 10-inches and “never perfectly round,” as their menu states. Guests can choose from the traditional pies, like Margherita or Quatro Formaggi (four cheeses,) or go for something a little different like the Capricciosa, with artichokes, ham, mushrooms, black olives, mozzarella, and a sunny side-up egg, or the Ortolana, a white pie with kale, black olives, mozzarella, and pecorino. To finish off the meal, guests can choose between two different dessert options, Fior di Latte soft serve with a variety of toppings, or Affogato.
Martina Pizzeria delivers a high quality Italian meal without the huge price tag. Each of the Fritti options are $5, while the Verdure options can range between $5 to $9. The pizzas here range between $7 for the Margherita, $9 for the Quattro Formaggi or the Funghi, and $10 through $12 for the rest of the pizza options. The desserts are both priced at $4.50. Also please note: Martina is also a no-tipping establishment.
In a nutshell:
The fast-casual King is ringing in a big year: Meyer is also opening up another Shake Shack at Astor Place – less than five minutes away from Martina. While this is his first spot for the pizza joint, it wouldn’t be surprising if Martina began multiplying all over the city. Say you’ve been to the original location before it blows up, and get yourself some delicious pizza.
