Restaurateur Jacques Ouari opens Maman & Mimi in Nolita

Located in his former restaurant Jacques 1534, Maman & Mimi blends French and Algerian cuisine. Taking inspiration from his French grandmother – Maman – and Algerian grandfather – nicknamed Mimi – the menu is a celebration of their family dinners.

The Spot:

Maman & Mimi is located right in the heart of Nolita, featuring French wallpaper, brown leather banquettes and mirrors throughout the space. Below the restaurant’s grand dining room, you’ll find a speakeasy lounge – Maman & Mimi Sous-Sol – with cozy booths, DJs and French cocktails.

The Food:

Balancing both French and Algerian dishes, the menu includes everything from steak tartare to dolma salmon (green cabbage stuffed with salmon) and chicken couscous. Before dinner, you can sit at the bar with wine and light bites such as flatbreads and crudité. Brunch is served on the weekends, offering avocado on house made focaccia, spongy Algerian pancakes and les oeufs benedict.

Maman & Mimi offers an extensive list of European wines and cocktails.

The Damage:

Small dishes vary between $9 and $25; entrees cost $18-$35; brunch is around $13-$18.

In a Nutshell:

With so many classic dishes on the menu and a speak-easy bar in the basement, Maman & Mimi is the perfect fit for this trendy little neighborhood. We also couldn’t agree more with Ouari’s Maman: “Brunch without Champagne is just a boring breakfast.”
