MakiMaki

OPENED142 DAYS AGO

Midtown has welcomed a new and affordable lunch option with made-to-order sushi spot, MakiMaki. The Midtown lunch scene has never been particularly overwhelming to 9 to 5-ers looking for a quick re-fuel but, recently, new spots to hit the area are starting to change that perception with spots like Oceana Poké, Mulberry & Vine and The Good Seed.

The Spot:

MakiMaki is a fast-casual restaurant and passion project by owner, Kevin Takarada – a Japanese American with a love of sushi and family background in hospitality. Don’t be fooled by the 650-square-foot spaces high-end decor typically associated with upscale sushi restaurants – MakiMaki is highly affordable.

The Food:

Takarada draws on his time spent in Japan when it comes to his approach to his menu – recalling on the care and thought put into the food preparation (no matter how casual the restaurant) with every dish. The focal point of the menu is the selection of maki rolls which are made to order off the menu or customized by customers. The fish is sourced from the same suppliers the city’s top sushi restaurants use and all sushi is cut by a trained sushi chef.

The Drinks:

For drinks, customers can expect to choose from Matcha and four different custom tea blends from Hon Yama, an 800 year old company that once supplied the shoguns of Japan, will be offered. Hon Yama’s teas have never before been sold in New York.

The Damage:

Cut rolls start at $6 and handrolls at $4.

In A Nutshell:

Yes, we have our fair share of affordable, high quality sushi spots that have hit the city in recent months – Kazunori and Sugarfish and the most notable openings – but, Maki Maki is not a fad, or large-scale chain, it is unique and focused on quality and, most importantly, it’s affordable.
