Madame Vo
It seems we’re embarking on a great new revamp of awesome Vietnamese cuisine in New York. The opening of Bunker on the Bushwick/Williamsburg border and, more recently, Hanoi House in the East Village have shown us that we are well and truly enjoying a Vietnamese restaurant renaissance, so why stop there? Madame Vo is the most recent recruit to the Vietnamese food scene in the city and it has everything ‘Pho’ covered.
Nestled among a plethora of Japanese restaurants along East 10th Street and, in typical New York City fashion, Madame Vo’s space is narrow and tight, seating about 50. But the space is sleek and modern and bright, making you feel like you’re in a sort of hidden oasis away from the hustle and bustle of the outside world when you’re inside.
These guys take their Pho (pronounced “fuh”) very seriously, simmering their beef broth for at least 24 hours to ensure the tastiest outcome possible. Their signature dish, The Madame Vo, has beef broth with rice noodles, brisket, rare flank, bone marrow and meatballs. There are also a large selection of smaller appetizers like the madame wings (caramelized in a garlic and fish sauce), spring rolls and a Vietnamese crepe filled with prawns and pork belly. There are a range of larger noodle, meat and fish dishes so you may have to make a few trips to this spot just to cover all of your favorites off!
There are a range of soft drinks available but the restaurant is also BYOB and they can make up any drinks you bring for you.
Their signature ‘Pho’ bowl starts from $16 and you can add extras like Oxtail for a further $3. Other options range from $8 for appetizers up to $16 for the most expensive entrees.
Madame Vo is a cute little spot in the East Village with an emphasis on offering authentic and innovative Vietnamese cuisine. Come for the Pho and leave with no regrets.
