Macchina

OPENED441 DAYS AGO

Gramercy Park North welcomes a new Italian restaurant – Macchina is now open.

Brought to you by Atomic Hospitality Group (the team behind The Bedford) in partnership with HPH Hospitality (of Harry’s and Dead Rabbit), Macchina serves contemporary Italian fare. The city is welcoming a lot of new Italian restaurants at the moment, including SIMÒ Pizza in the Meatpacking District and Bocce USQ in Union Square Park.

Macchina - interior

The Spot:

Similar to Williamsburg’s local neighborhood restaurant The Bedford, Macchina features a rustic design with a low-key vibe. The space is cozy with many two-person tables, alongside a small bar area perfectly suited for those dining solo.

Macchina - Burratta Pizza

The Food:

Offering Italian fare with a New York twist, Macchina serves playful dishes such as garlic knots with everything-bagel seasoning; avocado bruschetta and black-and-white pasta. Besides appetizers and pasta, the menu focuses heavily on red and white pies, featuring toppings such as Brussels sprouts and smoked bacon, figs and fennel or burrata. When the weekend rolls around, you can add an egg to your pie and call it brunch pizza.

The Drinks:

Located in the back of the restaurant, Macchina showcases an open cellar with Italian wines from Tuscany, Veneto and Piedmont, while barman Jason Madera serves house cocktails. Think Amuro Cappucino (made with rosemary grappa and basil leaves), Macchina Martini (Belvedere vodka with oven-roasted herbs) and Saffron Vesper (Plymouth Gin and fresh saffron).

The Damage:

Small dishes vary between $7 and $18; pastas and pizzas cost $12-$20; brunch is $11-$14.

In a Nutshell:

If you go to Macchina with a traditional Italian meal in mind, you’re going to be disappointed. With a menu that includes brunch pizzas with bacon and desserts with Oreo, Macchina is definitely more American than Italian, but fun nonetheless.
