Local Leaf

OPENED4 DAYS AGO

‘Healthy’ and ‘fast food’ are not words you often put together; but Kips Bay’s recent opening is the latest looking to change that, joining the ranks of The Sosta and Icelandic Fish & Chips. Offering up chef-crafted, creative dishes, Local Leaf is a health-conscious restaurant with a passion for sustainability and locally sourced produce.

It’s also pretty obsessed with one ingredient: the humble lettuce leaf. Lead by a team whose motto is ‘beleaf in local’, the restaurant serves up a range of super healthy lettuce wraps and bowls in a fast-casual environment.

The Spot:

Tucked away in Kips Bay on 3rd Avenue, the restaurant is an ideal spot to pick up a work lunch; bright and modern, with a decent amount of seating, it’s also a great place to relish your healthy choices. Head to the back to craft your wrap at the sleek granite and wood prep station, or stay near the large front window for your personalized smoothie.

The Food:

Using locally sourced ingredients, the team has committed to an environmentally conscious ethos and actively purchases second tier produce (nutritious, but not uniform, so less likely to be sold in grocery stores).

While fast food is usually very carb-heavy, Local Leaf’s signature fillings, including the West Coast (wild grain mix, seitan al pastor, black bean falafel and tortilla cruble) and the Upstater (wild grain mix, slow-roasted pork belly, maple-roasted Brussels sprouts and apples) are served up in Swiss chard wraps, platters, or bowls to make healthy eating effortless – you won’t miss your tortillas. Customizable options are also available, as well as Green crepes and breakfast bowls if you venture in during the morning.

The Drinks:

Local Leaf has a pretty extensive offering at itsHydration Bar’, with a wide selection of customizable juices and tea-based drinks, as well as smoothies and kombuchas.

The Damage:

Bowls and wraps come in at around $9-13, breakfast bowls at $9, and juices and smoothies at $6.50-10.

In A Nutshell:

Ditch your sad salads for Local Leaf’s more creative healthy options next lunchtime – and get on board with what will probably be the next fast food trend.
