Lalo

OPENED1005 DAYS AGO

Lalo is former El Rey chef Gerardo Gonzalez’s first ever solo venture in Chinatown.

If you’ve passed through the Lower East Side in the last year or so, you may have come across the Ely Rey Coffee Bar & Luncheonette and their healthy, vegan fare in a cosy setting just off Ludlow Street. Now, Gonzalez is opening a new spot and a totally different concept with a ‘New Age ’70s Mexican’ diner.

Since other restaurant openings around downtown Manhattan like Guac and Drunken Dumpling have focused on perfecting and offering one specific dish, Lalo brings a rather more varied menu to town.

Lalo’s menu veers away from the traditional ‘course style’ dining and into a mix-and-match style that offers a variety of differently sized portions from ‘party’ sizes to single portions. The cuisine style is just as eclectic with Lalo’s flavor profile consisting of Mexican-American with a sprinkling of Japanese, Middle East and even Jewish flavors.

Options include a take on clam chowder, substituting the usual cream with coconut milk, and a ‘black bean’ dip made with cannelloni beans, squid ink black garlic, pickled onion, banana peppers and cotta cheese. Desserts include options like a sweet plantain pie with a galena maria crust and turmeric meringue, a quatro leches cake with coconut, pineapple brûlée and lime zest and a caramelised Japanese bread with parsnip puree and goat’s milk caramel.

Lalo (whose name comes from Gonzalez’s nickname – a take on Gerardo) also serves up cocktails. These include the Sumac Sour (with sumac gin, lemon and aquafaba) as well as a mix of agua frescas like hibiscus orange ginger, salty chamoy soda and plum and shiso and fennel lemonade in addition to a range of old and new world wines.

Lalo’s space is slightly larger than Gonzalez’s previous spot at El Rey, which had just 15 stools. His new spot houses up to 47 covers with a 70s vibe decorated with hints of purple light and banquettes.
