Ladybird

OPENED1559 DAYS AGO

Ladybird, a new vegetarian tapas bar, has just opened in Manhattan’s West Side.

Headed up by restauranteur Ravi DeRossi (Mother and Pearl, Death & Company and Avant Garden) and chef Daphne Cheng (who also oversees the food at DeRossi’s, Mother and Pearl) Ladybird has a simple concept – to serve great food while raising awareness of the treatment of animals.

Not only is this demonstrated in the menu where you will find playful riffs on classic dishes like vegetable charcuterie, but also in the fact that a percentage of all proceeds will go to benefit the BEAST Foundation – an organization fighting against animal cruelty.

The menu itself is covered with dishes that a vegetarian’s dream would be made from. It’s a tapas focused menu of small dishes with Spanish influences and global ingredients. Items include a Caramelised Artichoke Heart (with marcona almonds, crème fraîche and maldon sea salt), Baby Beets (with blood orange jelly, lemon ricotta, dukkah and guajillo chili oil) and that inventive Vegetable Charcuterie (with smoked carrot, cured beet, mushroom pâté, beet chorizo, cultured cheese, fig compote and roasted grape) and sides, like Coconut and Quinoa Croquettas embellish the rest of the menu.

The desserts at Ladybird follow the theme of being classic yet unique and include a Saffron Semifreddo (with coriander peach and marcona almonds) and Churros (with chocolate, creme fraiche, and dukkah).

Drinks are equally as fresh as the menu and the cocktails include many of the same ingredients as the food, options include the Red Rail (with fresh beet juice, Niepoort tawny port, bitter amaro, and lime) or the Himalayan Quail (with fresh tangerine juice, French dry apple cider, Thai chili, and lime salt). The wine list is, of course, sustainably-focused offering carafes, glasses and bottles.

The 42-seat space, complete with marble floors, white-on-white velvet wallpaper, chandeliers and emerald green bar stalls, was designed by DeRossi himself.

Ladybird is not alone in its vegetarian mission – Urban Vegan Kitchen and Miss Paradis are just two of many other vegan and vegetarian restaurants you can find all over NYC.
