La Newyorkina

OPENED1153 DAYS AGO

La Newyorkina is a new shop in Greenwich Village offering paletas, a traditional Mexican dessert.

You may well have seen La Newyorkina’s tasty dessert stands across the city but now the brand is going permanent with their first full-service shop (pause and rejoice). Owner Fany Gerson originally a pastry chef who grew up in Mexico City (where she is already known for her famous paletas sold at La Newyorkina) also founded Dough the excellent doughnut shop in Brooklyn in 2010 but this new store is her most ambitious yet.

Greenwich village is home to many recent additions to the dessert scene most notably with the launch of vegan haven Sweets by CHLOE. but, La Neworkina is possibly the only place in the city where you can buy this traditional dessert.

The store offers six flavors of paletas, both water and dairy-based including flavors like avocado-passion fruit, flan flavor and a strawberry paleta made with crushed Maria cookies. One menu item will also be bringing something new to the New York ice-cream scene: the Nieve de Garrafa. Unlike traditional ice cream that is churned, this dessert is made with an oversized paddle and develops a different, more custard-like result in texture and form. This will be offered in flavors like coffee.

The iced treats also come with a warning: Eat Right Away! With no stabilizers in them, the desserts often melt quickly so they have to be eaten immediately – that’s one rule we are willing to obey. As it gets cooler there will also be other, warmer sweets on offer like a champurrado (a porridge of chocolate and corn made with masa and unrefined cane sugar) and marquesitas (a crispy waferlike treat made from cone batter and stuffed with fillings like gouda, cajeta, and jam).

La Newyorkina sits just south of Washington Square Park and owner, Fany Gerson has brought as much of her hometown of Mexico to the space’s decor as possible. One section of the counter has been made with tiles from Mérida, Yucatán and she even had an artist from Mexico flown in to paint a mural and design the exterior.
