La Lonchería

OPENED210 DAYS AGO

A new Mexican restaurant from the guys behind Lower Manhattan’s Hecho en Dumbo has opened in Brooklyn.

Danny Mena and Oscar León Bernal say they want to be ‘more adventurous’ with La Lonchería, which is inspired by the casual lunch restaurants of Mexico City.

The Spot:

The restaurant’s design is pared-back, with tiled floors, white and teal walls. There’s also a graffiti-style mural by the NYC design initiative It’s a living and a (super cool) neon eagle by neon workshop Let There Be Neon.

The Food:

New takes on Mexican classics dominate the menu, with five varieties of torta (Mexican sandwiches) including one we have to try because it’s called La Nueva Yorkina, and because it’s got pibil-marinated porchetta, habanero onions and avocado beans.

You can also get tacos (including grilled Ribeye, pastor-rubbed tuna, and roasted yam and vegan chorizo), grilled dishes including brisket, pork shoulder and octopus, and there’s a short-but-sweet selection of appetizers and side dishes, too.

The Drink:

Oscar Bernal is heading up the bar, with tequila, mezcals and other spirits from all over Mexico, as well as a selection of Mexican beers and wine, and cocktails he describes as ‘both playful and classic’.

The Damage:

It’s not too expensive here; tortas are $13, grilled dishes $16-17, appetizers $9-11 and most sides $5. Cocktails range from $10 to $13, a glass of wine is $8 and a beer will set you back $3-6.

In a Nutshell:

Great quality ingredients were a focus at Hecho en Dumbo and the guys are carrying this over in La Lonchería. Well-executed Mexican food is always a joy, and the simple but adventurous flavor combinations are getting us excited. Who can turn down a torta, anyway?
