Carma East

OPENED1093 DAYS AGO

We love a bit of dim sum fun in NYC, and now, Carma East has taken our favorite cuisine to new levels of fun by opening a pop-art dim sum bar in the East Village.

We’ve already seen how much fun can be had with dim sum when another restaurant opened in the East Village this year by the name of Drunken Dumpling. They’re oversized dumplings that came out about the size of a baby’s head and served with a straw had people lining up around the block to savor the delicacy. Carma East however, not only gives dim sum a cute makeover, but redefines the idea of dim sum to a fun and contemporary Asian cuisine.

Carma East is a sister restaurant to Carma Asian Tapas from the West Village. The executive chef comes from Taiwan’s renowned Din Tai Fung and offers up some seriously interesting and, at times, decadent dim sum.

There’s a truffle or foie gras soup dumpling as well as a mini crispy fish pie, a Sichuanese pork belly or mustard crab meat Chinese taco, all served in a visually engaging way with its popping aesthetic. They have also developed some of their own creations that are equally full of character as much as they are flavor, like “Angry Pork Feet,” “Lotus Root Salad” and the “Hulk Fried Rice.”

By the sounds of it, Carma East is definitely aiming to change the apparent perception that Chinese food can be somewhat ‘traditional.’ Their site states: “From ‘Tapas to Get Drunk with’ to ‘Comfort Food to Go with Other Comfort Food,’ Carma East is determined to overturn every traditional conception of Chinese cuisine.”

Either way, we’re open to ideas, and we never say “no” to dim sum, however it’s presented. Carma East are also offering a 20% discount for their entire launch week until 18th December.
