Karakatta

OPENED672 DAYS AGO

Karakatta is a new ramen restaurant dedicated to spicy ramen, now open in Greenwich Village.

After opening Mr Taka two years ago on the Lower East Side, owners Takayuki and Chef Takatochi saw that spicy ramen was the biggest draw, and so the idea for Karakatta was born.

The Spot:

Chef Takatochi is a man of firsts: his restaurant Bigiya in Tokyo was the first ramen restaurant to be listed on Michelin Tokyo Bib Gourmand in 2015, and Karakatta is the first spicy ramen restaurant in New York. The space is simple and small, fitted with a wooden bar area and a few tables, but you’re really there for the food.

The Food:

With spicy being the hottest attraction (pun not intended), Karakatta allows customers to pick a spice level for their ramen from level one to three. Ramen options include Spicy Ginger Stamina (loaded with ginger and chilli oil), butter-miso, Taka’s Shoyu and vegetable curry.

The Drinks:

Drinks are standard, including Asahi beer.

The Damage:

A bowl of spicy ramen costs around $14.

In a Nutshell:

Now that New York has a restaurant entirely devoted to spicy ramen, we’re wondering why no one thought of this idea any sooner.
