Japan’s well-known restaurant group Forrest Fooding Inc launches their first US venture in New York – Kaikagetsu NYC is now open on the Lower East Side.

Brought to you by creative director Tomoyuki Iwanami and restaurateur Yasuo Shigeta, Kaikagetsu NYC focuses on traditional Japanese cuisine from the Hida region of Japan. New York is now home to several high-end Japanese restaurants with a particular focus, including Yamada Chikara and Sushi Noz.

The Spot:

It’s not just the food that takes inspiration from Japan’s Hida region – Kiakagetsu NYC features design elements of the mountain’s historic homes, from black wood and white walls to little trinkets such as umbrellas and baskets, all sourced from the Hida region. The space is fitted with black leather booths and a sleek marble bar, while a room in the back is reserved for private dining and events.

The Food:

Helmed by Kaikagetsu’s top chefs – head chef Tatsuya Ishizaki, Masayoshi Onishi and Sumiko Ono – the menu includes dishes such as “Hida nigiri” (beef sushi), “Dashi” (Japanese broths) and “Hoba Yaki” (fire-roasted meats and vegetables on magnolia leaves). Kaikagetsu NYC offers both à la carte and kaiseki menus (a traditional Japanese multi-course dinner), with the latter being slightly more expensive…
