Jajaja

OPENED1483 DAYS AGO

Mexican food isn’t usually associated with healthy eating; hungry diners ordering Mexican usually envision mounds upon mounds of nachos, dripping with cheese, meat and sauce, or a burrito stuffed with two days’ worth of calories. However, all that might be due for a change with the opening of Jajaja, a south-of-the-border spot with healthy, plant-based cuisine in mind.

The Spot:

Jajaja (pronounced “hahaha”) is the newest restaurant to set up shop in the space that formerly held Golden Carriage Bakery.  Located on a bustling downtown corner home to local favorites 169 Bar and 12 Corners, the restaurant claims to be “innovating the traditional restaurant experience”.

Alongside the restaurant, Jajaja will also host a bodega-like setup offering Mexican street food and snacks for those nights when you’re just craving takeout.

The Food:

The menu is described as “plant-based”, which is a unique change of pace for Mexican cuisine, often heavy on dairy and various meats. According to DNAinfo, diners can expect to see an ‘exclusively vegan menu, including a hearts of palm ceviche with hijiki, bell peppers, tomato and avocado and cauliflower rice with cilantro-scallion-herb pesto’.

The Drinks:

To no one’s surprise, Jajaja‘s liquor selection is heavily influenced by what’s popular in Mexico. Tequila – and its cousin, mezcal – are the stars of the show here, along with a robust selection of Mexican beer (or cerveza, ideally pronounced with a heavy rolling ‘r’). The restaurant also supports small businesses with Mexican-style lagers and pilsners sourced from New York microbreweries. For diners staying off the booze, the menu also includes fresh-pressed juices.

The Damage:

The menu is currently in the process of being finalized, and prices have yet to be released. However, diners can expect prices in line with other trendy vegan/plant-based restaurants in Manhattan.

In A Nutshell:

For diners in the Lower East Side chomping at the bit for a unique spin on Mexican food, Jajaja is the place to check out. While it’s currently only open for dinner, diners can expect brunch and lunch service in the near future.
