Ichiran

OPENED509 DAYS AGO

The Japanese-based ramen chain arrives in Midtown

After opening their first US location in Bushwick back in 2016, founder Manabu Yoshitomi brings his signature tonkotsu ramen to Manhattan, yet in a slightly different setting. Midtown is certainly not the best dining destination in New York, but the area has welcomed several new great spots lately, including Sam Won Garden and Daa! Dumplings.

The Spot:

While Ichiran in Bushwick includes both a communal dining area and individual counter seats with partitions, Ichiran in Midtown solely features private booths. The concept may seem strange to some, but it allows guests to indulge and concentrate on the umami and the quality of the ramen in private. Inside the booth, Ichiran’s famous tonkotsu ramen is served through a small window with a bamboo curtain.

The Food:

Focusing all its efforts into their signature dish, tonkotsu ramen is the only ramen available on the menu. But there is room for personal preferences; an order form allows you to specify how you like your ramen. Think soft or firm noodles, heavy or light broth, additional toppings, and extra garlic if you wish – maybe it’s a good thing we’re dining solo. Besides the popular pork-based tonkotsu broth, there’s a small selection of other dishes, including Koshihikari white rice (short grain white rice with a slightly sweet flavor), marinated pork loin, and matcha pudding for dessert.

The Drinks:

Using matcha in both the soft drinks and alcoholic beverages, options include matcha tea, matcha beer and matcha shochu.

The Damage:

A bowl of tonkotsu ramen costs around $18 (without additional toppings).

In a Nutshell:

Ichiran is hugely successful in Japan and beyond – the ramen chain currently counts 75 locations – but their tonkotsu ramen has an equally dedicated group of fans here in New York. As Ichiran’s first US location in Bushwick drew long lines on their opening day, we’re expecting the Midtown outpost to be just as popular.
