Hwa Yuan Szechuan

OPENED17 DAYS AGO

Old schoolers may know or heard of the legendary Chinese restaurant, Hwa Yuan, that closed years ago. Now, the son of the owner, Chen Lieh Tang, is opening a new one in the original location in hopes to recreate the success of his father, Yun Fa Tang, with Hwa Yuan Szechuan. We know well that we New Yorkers are lucky to have an abundance of top-notch Asian dining destinations in this city, not to mention new ones cropping up all the time like Rice & Gold, Chinese Tuxedo and new locations of X’ian Famous Foods.

The Spot:

The huge space encompasses three floors with over 160 seats that Tang is aiming at young people to fill them with. It was what his father did back in the day when it opened in 1968 (it later closed in the eighties) and he’s hoping to reincarnate that success now. Located at 42 East Broadway, the restaurant will dish out classics from Chinese cuisine like scallion pancakes and Sichuan kung po chicken done simply. The family also owns Shorty Tang in Chelsea.

The Food:

If you’ve tried and love those cold sesame noodles that Shorty Tang are known for then you’ll be happy to hear that they’re serving them at Hwa Yuan Szechuan too. In addition to that there’s over 80 options of dishes including items like Shanghai-style pork soup dumplings, Sichuan-style whole fish and even an entire raw bar with oysters and shrimp cocktail. Of course there’s classics like peking duck but there’s also a beef shank with sweet potatoes. There’s also cheesecake for dessert.

In A Nutshell:

Tang’s plans with Hwa Yuan Szechuan also span farther than just recreating one of the best Chinese restaurants in New York City (we know, we wouldn’t be content with just that goal either) but also to rebuild the area of East Broadway which he feels never fully recovered after 911, despite surrounding areas like Tribeca booming since. Check it out for a bit of history and (hopefully) to see some history in the making.

42 East Broadway (Catherine Street), 212-966-6002.
