OPENED426 DAYS AGO

East Village welcomes a new Chinese restaurant – Hunan Slurp Shop.

Growing up in Henyang, a city in the Hunan Province of China, artist and chef Chao Wang aims to bring his hometown flavors to New York, offering contemporary Hunan cuisine at his very first restaurant – Hunan Slurp Shop.

Hunan Slurp Shop - Hometown Lu Fen

The Spot:

Following suit with the menu, Hunan Slurp Shop boasts a contemporary design, featuring white walls and soft wooden tones. The light-filled space is fitted with both traditional seating and large communal tables, and as you’ve probably guessed from the restaurant’s name: slurping is encouraged.

The Food:

Paying homage to the city filled with rice noodle shops, Hunan Slurp Shop focuses on the beloved dish “mifen” (rice noodles known for their subtle flavor). Rice noodles are paired with options such as fish fillet, sliced beef and oyster mushrooms, while you’ll also find a variety of hot and cold dishes on the menu.

With 25 years experience as a painter, chef Wang marries the region’s traditional cooking methods with his artistic skills. Serving five-colored dumplings (made with vegetable-based dyes) and replacing dark-colored preserved eggs with wraps of eggplant, each dish is elevated to be a pleasure for the eye.

The Drinks:

Beer and wine will be available once Hunan Slurp Shop has a liquor license in September.

Hunan Slurp Shop - Pork Shank

The Damage:

Noodle soups vary between $16 and $28; cold dishes cost $6-12; hot plates are around $16-18.

In a Nutshell:

East Village is home to many great rice noodle spots, including Little Tong and Madame Vo, but Hunan Slurp Shop hopes to stand out with its inventive dishes.
