Grimm Artisanal Ales

OPENED16 DAYS AGO

Grimm Artisanal Ales opens its first permanent brewery and taproom in Williamsburg.

Grimm Artisanal Ales has received numerous accolades over the past five years, all while brewing their beers out of other commercial breweries. Now, founders Lauren and Joe Grimm have finally opened their very own brewery and taproom, which gives them a space to experiment and offer new styles, alongside their usual line-up of popular beers.

Williamsburg is on an absolute roll at the moment, welcoming one hot destination after the other – think Republic of Booza, Tacocina and North 3rd Street Market.

The Spot:

This isn’t your average brewery though – the space is refreshingly bright and airy, complete with tropical plants and red velvet curtains around the taproom. Industrial elements complement the rustic-looking oak barrels in the back area, which are used for aging and conditioning sour beers. If this sounds complicated, that’s because it is: not a single brewery in New York serves long term oak-aged sours as a regular menu offering, except for Grimm’s brewery – definitely not average.

The Food:

Aiming to offer dishes that pair perfectly with Grimm beers, the brewery has brought in chefs Eli and Max Sussman of Williamsburg’s Middle Eastern restaurant Samesa. The menu includes Samesa staples, including a chicken shawarma melt (served on a pita with purple slaw)` and the ‘Samesa Board’ (pita chips, marinated feta, taramosalata, muhammara, olives, spicy salami). Because this wouldn’t be a brewery without a beer-infused dish, you’ll also be able to enjoy a pumpernickel pita with Grimm-spiked dips.

The Drinks:

Grimm Artisinal Ales gives your bottomless Bloody Marys at brunch some healthy competition: the brewery will release new beers every Saturday morning. The current line-up includes the Flow State (a Golden Sour), Zero Anniversary (Double IPA), and Tracery (barrel-aged sour beer blended with fresh saison). The brewery also serves a selection of New York State wine and cider.

The Damage:

Dishes vary between $6 and $23.

In a Nutshell:

While there’s definitely no shortage of breweries in Brooklyn, Grimm Artisanal Ales manages to stand out by offering oak-aged sours and new experimental beers every week.
