Gramercy Kitchen

OPENED12 DAYS AGO

While many new restaurants open in New York every week, some are forced to close due to the fierce competition and high rents in the city. Old-school diners in particular, struggle to keep their head above the water, but there’s good news for locals of the Gramercy Park area. After being closed for almost a whole year, Gramercy Cafe opens its doors under a new name: Gramercy Kitchen. But the name is not the only thing that has changed.

The Spot:

The new owners Andreas Koutsoudakis and Kosta Plaitis – best known as the co-founders of Trading Table – have given the old space a modern spin, with a little help from designer Joseph Calabrese. The 2,000 square foot restaurant features blue and white tones, restored wood and exposed brick. The best place in the house might be the counter, which is decorated with glass tile and overlooks the open kitchen, giving you a sneak peak of the chefs’ work.

The Food:

The menu nods to the present too, while still staying true to its diner roots. For breakfast, you can have Kellogg’s cereal in inventive flavor combinations, such as Baklava Frosted Mini Wheats with walnuts, pistachio’s, honey and salt. Dinner makes way for comforting classics, including Chicken and Waffles with balsamic syrup or Disco Short Ribs topped with cheese curds and gravy.

The Drinks:

Even the drinks have been given a fun twist. Gramercy Kitchen will be the first independent restaurant to offer freestyle Coca-Cola soda combinations, which will also be used to make creative cocktails.

The Damage:

Prices are still unknown, but given the fact Gramercy Kitchen is a diner, it’s unlikely that it’s going to cost you a fortune.

In a nutshell:

With elevated classics and creative Coca-Cola drinks, Gramercy Kitchen is set out to survive in the ever-expanding restaurant scene.
