German’s Soup

OPENED159 DAYS AGO

Iconic Guyanese restaurant – German’s Soup – opens its first US location in Brooklyn.

After the founder – Hubert “German” Urling Sr – opened German’s Soup in 1960 in Guyana’s capital, Georgetown, the small restaurant quickly became hugely popular in the country’s region, attracting both local workers and the country’s political elite. Now, the famed restaurant brings the traditional recipes to Brooklyn.

The Spot:

As soon as ex-pat Guyanese return home for the holidays, they head to German’s Soup for their fix of Creole food. With that in mind, Clinton Urling and Hubert Urling Jr (the sons of the founder) have brought German’s Soup to a neighborhood rich in Guyanese culture – East Flatbush. Hearty Guyanese soups and signature dishes draw the crowd at the fast-casual eatery, so don’t expect much from the décor – think simple furnishings in a small space.

The Food:

Using the family’s traditional Creole recipes, each soup is made with a base of slow-cooked yellow split peas, before adding meats and vegetables. Options include the signature cow heel soup; chicken and beef, as well as vegetarian versions with corns and plantains. But you won’t just find soup on the menu – German’s Soup aims to showcase other Guyanese specialties too, including pepperpot (a meat stew with orange peel, cinnamon and leaf thyme), “cookup” rice (rice cooked with meats and herbs in coconut milk) and stewed pumpkin.

The Drinks:

The Damage:

Dishes vary between $4 and $11.

In a Nutshell:

With German’s Soup being undeniably influential in Guyana, the sons couldn’t have chosen a better location for their first US location. While the family-owned business expects to attract many Guyanese ex-pats, the traditional dishes are likely to appeal to fans of Caribbean flavors and Creole cooking too.
