Gem

OPENED541 DAYS AGO

Chef Flynn McGarry has opened Gem, his first restaurant, at just 19 years old.

Yes, you read that right, and there’s plenty more about this teen chef and his restaurant – joining other great spots on the Lower East Side – that will surprise you.

The Spot:

If you have watched the documentary Chef Flynn, you will know the teenage prodigy has been mastering his culinary skills since the age of ten. After gaining enough experience at his supper club restaurant Eureka – which he ran out of his childhood home in San Fernando Valley and as a pop-up in New York City – and staging at places like Eleven Madison Park, Flynn has ‘finally’ opened his very own space.

Gem – designed by McGarry in collaboration with friend and interior designer Brett Robinson – is split into two experiences: The Living Room and The Dining Room, with warm and neutral tones contributing to a homely atmosphere.

The Food:

The Living Room is an all day-café and coffee shop, serving a selection of homemade pastries, including caramelized white chocolate blondies – we’re listening, Flynn – and blueberry violet muffins.

The Dining Room is definitely the main attraction, though, offering a 12–15 course dining experience. The idea is that the rooms complement one another: guests begin in The Living Room with snacks and champagne, before being seated in the Dining Room to enjoy a multi-course menu, consisting of small plates, large family-style dishes and dessert.

So what will Chef Flynn be creating in the kitchen? Dishes include King Crab with leeks, grapefruit and rose, a series of dishes called the Lamb Feast, peanut Ritz crackers with foie gras, agnolotti filled with chicory and the obligatory petits fours to finish. Fancy.

The Drinks:

This wouldn’t be a complete without wine pairings, which will cost you another $100 per person. Wine, beer, sake, and cider will also be available by the glass and bottle.

The Damage:

The Dining Room experience of 12–15 courses costs $155 per person (including gratuity).

In a Nutshell:

Chef Flynn has received a lot of publicity for a 19-year old – both good and bad – and it will be interesting to see what critics will think of his culinary creations. Here’s hoping the food is good enough to make us forget how underachieving we suddenly feel…
