Gazala’s Place

OPENED714 DAYS AGO

Middle Eastern restaurant Gazala’s Place reopens on the Upper West Side.

After closing the doors in 2015, Gazala’s Place is now back on New York’s dining scene with its popular paper-thin pitas.

Gazala's Place - hummus

The Spot:

This city might be dotted with Middle Eastern restaurant right now (including newcomers Dez and Kish-Kash), but Gazala’s Place brings something different to the table. The focus is on Druze fare, a religion with roots mainly in the Middle East, which combines flavors of Syria, Lebanon, Israel and Jordan. Owner Gazala Habibi cooks the dishes she grew up eating, using recipes that have been handed down from generation to generation.

Gazala's Place - Bourekas

The Food:

While you can order hummus and falafel, try something more adventurous like vine leaves stuffed with rice and meat, cheese cigars (dough shells with spiced potato purée), or one of the many great pita-style pies. Mains are all about grilled meats; go with beef or lamb kebab on a bed of tomato sauce, silky-smooth hummus with shawarma, or if you’re really hungry, Moshakal (chef’s selection of four types of meat). Whatever you choose, make sure to order a side of Druze pitas; rather than doughy and thick, they are super thin and light – luckily, because you’ll need as much room as possible for this Middle Eastern feast.

The Drinks:

Gazala’s Place is a BYOB restaurant.

The Damage:

Mezze costs around $7-$13; mains vary between $18 and $24.

Gazala's Place - chicken and beef kebabs

In a Nutshell:

While the competition is tough with New York’s fast-growing Middle Eastern scene, Gazala’s Place seems to be in a league of her own with a specific focus on Druze fare.
