Eureka at Kava

Eureka, one of the best new places to eat in Manhattan’s West Side, is an eight-seat tasting menu counter, tucked in the back of European cafe Kava.

The cafe is run by famed young chef, Flynn McGarry. Known as ‘the Justin Bieber’ of food, McGarry has been hosting his Eureka pop-up tasting menu in L.A and NYC since he was eleven. At just sixteen years of age, McGarry became the youngest 30 under 30 Zagat honoree for his Eureka pop up in Los Angeles and has been named one of Time magazine’s most influential teens two years in a row.

Now, at just seventeen, McGarry is possibly the quintessential modern day child star. Having taught himself to cook from Thomas Keller’s, The French Laundry Cookbook and learning techniques from various TV chefs and videos on youtube, McGarry has successfully created his own unique style, and to an incredible standard, too.

Eureka serves a sixteen course menu, five nights a week, that is inspired by global cultures using local meats, fish and produce. Whilst the menu is subject to change, some of the items have included Maine sea urchin (brined in seawater with carrots and coffee), toast (soaked in gruyere fat and maple syrup) and poussin (baked in salt with celeriac au vin and mustard).

To accompany the dishes, Eureka offers a nine-pour wine pairing and a small, curated list of wines and beers by the bottle or glass.

The experience that guests get when they visit Eureka is an intimate one. While sat at the counter, guests are able to oversee all of the action in the kitchen and are able to interact with McGarry and his team as they cook and serve the courses.

The space where the counter is housed in, Kava, is a small wine and coffee bar and guests are also welcome to have a coffee or tea after their dinner at Kava also. As of October 1st, McGarry also started to consult Kava on their breakfast and lunch menu so find some time to check that out too.

The West Side’s other new openings include Ancolie and Chumley’s.
