Empellón Al Pastor

OPENED32 DAYS AGO

Mexican-inspired restaurant and bar Empellón Al Pastor arrives at Midtown’s POD 39 hotel.

While the East Village original is decidedly casual, Empellón Al Pastor at the Pod 39 hotel offers a more elevated experience with a new menu and rooftop bar.

The Spot:

The 6,000 square foot space has a private dining room, lounge and game room, complete with electric murals, Persian geometric patterns, greenery, and plush leather couches. Long wooden high-top tables line the dining room for large groups and smaller tables allow for more intimate conversation.

The Food:

Besides the iconic duo of al pastor tacos and guacamole, Empellón Al Pastor has upped its game with a selection of new dishes. A few worth your while include broiled oysters with hoja santa and bacon, chihuahua sticks with tomato-chipotle sauce, and crunchy corn masa ice cream bars. If you’re a brunch lover, get excited: the restaurant’s new brunch menu features options for everyone, such as egg and cheese on a Portuguese roll, hummus with cucumbers and za’atar, the obligatory avocado toast, and miniature versions of Empellón’s tacos.

The Drinks:

Pair your tacos with a tiki-inspired cocktail, created by beverage director Noah Small. Newcomers include the Mutineer (Charanda Uruapan Rum with cinnamon and pink grapefruit), Green Banana (Avua Cachaça and citrus), and a painful reminder of your next-morning commitment, the Yoga Mat (Pueblo Viejo Blanco and coconut water).

The Damage:

Dishes vary between $6 and $18; cocktails cost around $14-$19.
